I study surface climate variability and change through the lens of atmospheric wave dynamics and ocean–atmosphere interaction. I combine observations, idealized models, and coupled climate model experiments to trace how remote forcing, from the tropics to the poles, reaches surface climate.

I am a postdoctoral researcher in the Weather and Climate Dynamics Laboratory at Seoul National University, where I also completed my Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Seok-Woo Son.

Surface climate anomalies are rarely made where they are observed. A remote forcing, such as an ocean heat anomaly or a retreating ice edge, excites a planetary-scale wave response. What determines which regions warm or cool, dry or moisten, is not the forcing itself but the position and amplitude of that response. I work on this link, and on the wave–mean-flow interaction through which the mean state feeds back on the waves it supports.
